The unmentioned musical heroes of West End: thank you for the music!
We went to see the show Mamma Mia! last night. Again.
This time we didn’t go to see the plot, cast or ABBA phenomena. We went to ‘see’ the band!
Well, you cannot actually see them. They are almost underground, slotted between the stage and the audience.
Don’t bother googling their names. You won’t be able to find them.
They are not on the ‘cast list’, with no credits to their name.
They play live every night. Sometimes twice a day. The best musicians this city has to offer, handpicked for their incredible gift. And trust us, they are good! We have seen them in action not just at the show but in our studio too. Incredible talent!
Despite their long and successful careers and their vital part in this musical they never take a bow on the stage or get your applause. They are unmentioned musical heroes of West End.
Next time when you are in the theatre, have a little peek ‘under stage’. And give a little of your applause just to them.
So do say:
Thank you for the music, the songs I’m singing
Thanks for all the joy they’re bringing
Who can live without it, I ask in all honesty
What would life be?
Without a song or a dance what are we?
So I say thank you for the music
For giving it to me …
